A New Artifact

Have you grown tired of my endless stream of reviews of various design cards? Of course you haven’t, loyal reader, because you love reading everything that I write! However, let’s assume that you are indeed completely sick of design cards and ready to move on to something else. With that in mind, what could be better than design-aiding artifacts? That’s right, design-aiding artifacts created by me! But before we get into that, let’s step back for a bit and discuss artifacts that aren’t cards.

As you already know, not all design artifacts are “Creative Whack Pack” derivatives. They can be quite a variety of things, including pre-patterns, storyboards, and scenarios. More specifically, one could perhaps define the term “artifact” (in the sense of design) as “an object, either physical or conceptual, that is used either to influence the design process, or as part of the design itself”. Come to think of it, that wasn’t very specific at all. However, if this class has taught me anything, it’s that there seems to be very little agreement as to what the term “artifact” actually refers to in design. Of the various papers dealing with design “artifacts”, none seem to share quite the same meaning. As previously mentioned, the textbook Interaction Design: Beyond Human Computer Interaction defines artifacts as things that “mediate” one’s interaction with the world, and can serve as a communication language. In the paper about pre-patterns, the authors hope that their pre-patterns will serve as a “communication language” between designers. In the paper Artifact as Theory-Nexus, the authors discuss artifacts as embodying “psychological claims”. After this, the list goes on. With that in mind, there is plenty of potential for differing ideas of what artifacts should be.

That said, the notion of artifacts that aid the design process remains, perhaps, the one that strikes me as the most interesting. However, what hasn’t been done yet? Certainly, the idea of design cards has been done many times before. Web-based collections of information also exist, such as Virginia Tech’s own LINK-UP, a textual database of information accessed via a web browser interface? So, what’s left?

A screenshot from Zork 1.

Have you ever play one of those text-adventure games? (They were big in the 1980s, but they still make new ones to this day.) Some popular ones included the Zork series (see picture) and the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (based on the book of the same name). If you’re unfamiliar with such games, they’re basically like choose your own adventure books on steroids — using commands like “walk north” and “kick mailbox”, you can navigate the story, which will eventually result in some kind of ending, or in your character dying (usually the latter). However, I was thinking: what if this sort of presentation were applied to some of the concepts of artifacts from class? And that, ladies and gentlemen, brings us to…

Design Quest 3000: The Tentative Title

My idea is both simple and perhaps overly vague, but it basically goes like this: create a text-adventure game (or “interactive fiction” as they are sometimes called) to aid design. The game would draw from existing scenarios, designed to put you, the designer, into the shoes of potential users in such a way that might cause you to rethink your problem entirely. Basically, the idea is to combine the generically inspiring anecdotes of the Creative Whack Pack with the more-relevant design ideas of the IDEO cards, and create an experience more immersive (and, hopefully, more fun and memorable) than what you’d simply get by playing with cards. To this end, the game would be geared at quite a wide swath of people, from seasoned designers looking for generic inspiration to novices looking to learn more about design processes.

From this game, I hope that we could learn a bit more about what exactly makes design artifacts worthwhile. Can they be worthwhile at all? My hope is that, by making the experience a “game” rather than a deck of cards, people could have fun with it even when they’re not trying to solve a specific design problem, and consequently wouldn’t have to deal (as much) with the “this feels contrived” feeling I got during all the card-test design sessions done earlier.

Mancala

Pictured below is my new game of Mancala. It cost me $13 at Toyworld. After reading the history and rules of the game at Wikipedia, I couldn’t resist buying it. It is a very old game (at least 1300 years), but like most good games it has few rules and is easy to play. Note easy to play, not easy to win!

After a few games, I still couldn’t see any obvious strategy! So I searched the www and came upon Fritz Dooley’s Mancala Center. The optimum opening move is explained but despite a great deal of computer modelling, he concludes:

“We did not find a backward-induction sure-win strategy that resulted in such a quick, clear and decisive win that memorizing a series of plays several levels deep into the game would yield a practical way of consistently winning without having to apply soft strategy.  Thus, the relevance to a real player of our proof of mancala’s triviality is small.  In this regard, the triviality of mancala is more akin to that of chess than to that of tic-tac-toe.”

And so I will continue playing Mancala in search of winning strategies that have so far eluded me. Do you have any good strategies?

An Update On The Weekend.

Sorry LizardSmizard blog readers, I totally forgot to blog for awhile, but i’m here now! Any way, over the weekend I had three Soccer games, ( two yesturday, and one today). Yesturday we won our first game, 4 to 3, and dominated our second game, 9 to 4. But unfortunately we lost the game today 3 to 4. The reff really hated our team because just before the whistle blew some one on my team, Emily shot and scored. But apparently she shot it after the whistle and it didn’t count. We would have tied the game if that shot would have gone in. What was really annoying was the other team shot and the reff gave them an extra four seconds. RAWR!! But two out of three is really good. =)

Old Mans Review of the Nintendo Wii Game System

It’s true, I’m an old timer. Approaching 60 years old. That doesn’t mean I’m, Game, dead though. Not yet anyway. I’ve always enjoyed video games starting waaaay back with the original Atari 2600,, Game, and early Nintendo game systems such as the SNES. Well, some things never change. A good game back then is probably still a good game. Every year the systems get more advanced particularly the memory and graphics. Some of the new systems are almost too graphic intense for me. I don’t need to see every texture, every blade of grass, to have a good time. In 2006, Nintendo released the Wii system and my daughter got one, Game, for Christmas. The Wii was a unique system mostly due to its controller, a very sensitive remote control device, Game, . This device is very accurate and is a pleasure to use in many games. The game itself can use the Wiimote in a number of ways. It can be held in different directions such as pointing a flashlight, or sideways like a bicycle handle. There are several controls on the Wiimote including a directional pad, buttons, and a trigger type button under the Wiimote. The Wiimote makes this system unique and offers great interactive wireless control. Some other interesting features of the Wii, Game, are its, Game, ability to play older Nintendo games, such as GameCube games, as well as older Nintendo 64 games and even SNES games through the virtual channel. This is a big move in the right direction as far as I’m concerned, because it’s nice to not abandon the older games for newer models. The Wii also connects wired, or wireless to the internet, and to Nintendo. This allows for many other features on the system, Game, including browsing the Internet, and the download of “Wiiware” games. There are also channels on the Wii for photo applications, news, weather and more. To top off all of this, the Nintendo at its release, was, Game, one of the most inexpensive, Game, game systems of its day. It has become the most popular game system, Game, of all time. Many of the games for the Wii are centered around its controller. It comes with a sports game pack that features bowling, tennis and other games. In these games the Wiimote is used as one would use the bowling ball, or a tennis racquet. One must be a bit careful when doing this, not to throw the Wiimote through the TV screen. Nintendo addresses this by attaching a wrist strap to the Wiimote, and reminds players during the, Game, game to use the straps..Bowling is a particular all around favorite of many generations. Most people young or old enjoy this accurate representation of the real thing. There are a large amount of games available for the Wii. Many of them are sports oriented games, driving games; puzzle type games, and even shooter games. One of my favorite games for the Wii,, Game, is Resident Evil 4, a first person shooter. (Not bad for an old guy?). In this game the wiimote is used as a gun, rifle, or knife, while the nunchuck controller is used to walk around. I won’t go into RE’s game play at depth at this point because it is definitely deserving of its own review. The first time I saw the game, I thought it would not be my type of game. It features, Game, some very gross and violent scenes, although the, Game, artwork is exceptional. When you shoot a zombie like character in the head, or kick him in the head, it explodes in what sounds like a ripe melon exploding, Game, . But once you get over these gross, Game, things, the game is very engaging to say the least. The Wiimote makes using a rifle, gun or knife very realistic. Its rather amusing to see someone playing the game, sitting on a chair slashing away with the wiimote.RE4 also includes some clever and stylish puzzle like activity. All in all, I’d have to say it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played on any system, but the Wiimote really makes it much more enjoyable. It takes many many hours to complete this game, and it is a lot of fun. Strangely enough, this is also one of the most inexpensive games for the Wii. The soundtrack, beautiful animation and excellent game play make this a must, for the Wii player. I also enjoy a game called Smooth Moves which really makes use of the Wiiremote which is referred to as a “baton” in this game. In this game you are playing hundreds of micro games, trying to do simple things like opening a bottle, driving, hammering, Game, a nail, all in split seconds. Another big boost for the Wii is a game called Wii-Fit. This is a, Game, virtual exercise and fitness trainer that has become quite popular. This game gives the viewer a workout as he completes various strength and posture exercises. Wii-Fit if properly done will definitely improve your fitness, Game, level. I recommend the Wii to many people, young and old as a great addition to their home entertainment. Take it from an old man, its lots of fun, and Wii should all never underestimate the importance of fun.

Sharks Destroy Ducks, 6-0

This was so bad I’m not even going to bother writing about it. The Ducks were missing quite a few regular players and San Jose dressed their NHL roster tonight.

From NHL.com:

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – Defenseman Doug Murray scored three goals, Evengi Nabokov made 15 saves and newcomers Manny Malhotra and Dany Heatley helped the San Jose Sharks beat the Anaheim Ducks 6-0 in exhibition play Friday night.

Malhotra scored his first goal since signing a free-agent deal Wednesday, while Heatley, acquired from Ottawa on Sept. 12, had an assist for his first point.

Ryan Clowe and Devin Setoguchi also scored for the Sharks (3-2-1).

Murray had a goal in each period.

Murray opened the scoring with 5:14 left in the first, taking a pass from Heatley and scoring from the right side. It was Murray’s first goal of the preseason.

The defenseman added his second goal early in the second, ripping a shot from just inside the blue line past goalie Justin Pogge’s right side.

Murray completed the hat trick in third, scooping up a rebound on the left side and scoring with a shot that got away from Pogge on his left side.

Malhotra chipped a shot over Pogge’s shoulder from just inside the crease in the Sharks’ three-goal second period.

Pogge finished with 30 saves for Anaheim (4-3-0).

Friday and I got Homework

First I want to start by saying I am loving my new breakfast treat. The past 2 days I have had a Vita Top and it is like eating dessert for breakfast. I can’t believe this thing is healthy and only 100 calories. Hard to believe. LOVE IT!!!! I can’t wait to try other flavors.

Today was dress down day which was great because I hate dressing up most of the time. Sometimes it is ok, but today was great to through on a pair of jeans and plus it was pay day…YAYYYY! For lunch I packed leftover stir fry and 2 kiwis. When I got home I relaxed for a bit and then headed over to watch Emily and Molly (Sam’s cousins, well my cousins too now) play field hockey. I could not pass up this game because they played Ocean City, the town I grew up in. OC has always been REALLY REALLY good. They still are because they won 8-0. WOW! A shut out. Supposedly that is how all there games are. No one can score against them. The team is required to play all year and not play any other sports and in the summer they have to go to a special camp where college students go. CRAZY.

I have homework this weekend:

At work we are starting a new program with some of the kids called Fundations. Some of the schools around here do it as a whole class instruction, but the school I am in is just going to start it out with the students who really need extra help. So I will be working with 4-5 students during centers or writers workshop. It is a really cute approach and can’t wait to start. It will be like I am teaching again. Getting to come up with different lessons and stuff. There is a manual, but I will have my own spin and little group to teach.

Dinner and a Package:

After the game I stopped at Yama to pick up dinner and I ordered salmon terriyaki (for Sam), Tobiko, Hawaiian roll, sunny California, sweet potato, and some age tofu. I had a package waiting for me when I got home. I was surprised because I haven’t ordered anything lately. I opened it up and it was a pedometer. I HAVE NO CLUE were it came from. It was pretty cool though a little cheap, but always nice to get a surprise. I also got my first Runner’s World magazine. Can’t wait to read it.

Paintball and Respect for Our Military? What on earth is that about?

I spent about 3.5 to 4 hours playing paintball yesterday and all I can say is… WHAT A BLAST! I am bruised and aching from head to toe. We found out after the first four games we were playing that the paintballs we were using were bad. They wouldn’t bust so they were like rubber bullets and they hurt like crazy. Each solid hit left circular bruises about the size of a silver dollar. Even though it hurt really bad when that happened (I counted 21 welts; 5 left the big bruises) it was the most fun I’ve had in quite a while. However, as we were playing, I was had a revelation of sorts about our military personnel.

You see, I’ve always had a respect for the men and women of our armed forces. My grandfather was a Marine who fought and was injured in the second World War. My father was in the Air Force for almost 22 years. I have two nephews currently serving in Iraq and Afganistan and a cousin who has served for many years in the air national guard. One of my uncles has served for many years as well. I have always respected their service and the sacrifices they made for the rest of us. But yesterday, as I crouched behind a barrel under heavy fire from my “enemies”, I realized in the midst of the adrenaline and pain that this was just a game. I couldn’t even begin to imagine if those little rubber pellets were real bullets. I began to imagine what it must be like to be in a real war situation and to be under fire from real weapons and, although there is no comparison to what it must really be like, I gained a whole new appreciation for the soldiers out there every day in battle.

So as I go throughout my day today, I’m going to try to remember those serving in our armed forces today – under real fire from real weapons and will remember the sacrifices they have all made on our behalf. Whether or not you agree with any particular war or not, you have to appreciate the protection we get as a country from the men and women who serve to protect us every day. Thank you very much for your sacrifice and thank you for your service to our country!

Need For Speed - Shift :- Hits #1!!!

Yup! the game is out and already ruling the charts!

Need For Speed – Shift is the thirteenth installment to the title! Last year, “Undercover” was released, which was a kind of remake of their highest successful installment named “Most Wanted”.

“Shift” was announced in January this year(2009) as part of a three-game announcement that includes Need For Speed: Nitro and Need For Speed: World Online.

The game had been under  development for 2 years!! The game involves many new advancements, highly detailed in-car view to name one! While playing, the player can actually see how the driver in the game shifts the gear in between to make it more realistc. And if this isn’t realistic enough for you, then more exiting feature like, a highly detailed car crash sound effects have and a temporary slight blur effect on the the screen when the car crashes as well as a sharp gasp of breath from the driver before a collision.

Here is a video of the review of the game…

The game has been released for every major consoles like PS3, X-Box 360 and even PCs’.

And now as I wrap it up, I’ll leave you with the exciting teaser of the game!

Excited???

The Realities of Fighting Aliens - Halo 3 ODST Trailer

It’s not as glamorous as you think.

There are no hot princesses,  beautiful space-scapes or even inter-species saloons where man and alien can put aside their differences (tentacles) and relax over a stiff drink. No, the life an inter-galactic soldier – or Orbital Drop Shock Trooper – is an action-packed, dangerous and often short-lived existence.

Or so I’m led to believe from this awesome short for the new Halo 3 ODST game on XBox 360 titled ‘The Life’.

I’m not a gamer but I sure as hell want to be one now.

Hopefully a better path lies ahead of me...

A week left till September 30th and that will be my last day in my company.

The reason I resigned? Since early this year, it felt like my company management had lost its direction as to what it wants to achieve as a game developing company. There was no focus on what platform we should do, what audience we should target and what game genre we should excel at. Granted that producing multi-platform games is a valid business strategy, the management should consider what human resource they currently possess before trying to jump onto the big boys’ bandwagon. A company size of no more than 30 pax trying to produce games for WiiWare, Nintendo DS, Sony PSP and possibly XBLA concurrently… that is pretty damn ambitious I’ll say.

However, the company losing its direction and focus is just part of the reason. The main reason I resigned is because I feel that I didn’t have any chance to perform the role of a game designer since February 2009. When I first joined the company, I was really happy to be given the chance to work under a Lead Game Designer, let’s call him D. He gave me a lot of creative space to create game data for his mini games and went on to give me full responsibility of the game narrative scripting and the freedom to work directly with the programmers. In short, I felt that he trusted me and valued my opinion even though I am a fresh graduate. I was and am still very grateful to him for giving me such a wonderful working experience.

Sadly, things didn’t go so well after my first project. I was shifted to work on a game prototype with another team and ever since joining the team, my role as a Game Designer went from creative to clerical. I spent most of my time updating game design documents for my Project Manager under his strict supervision as he felt that he should have full control of the game design. There was even this one time when I was discussing with our UI artist about how we can improve the aesthetics of the UI, I was told not to interfere with the UI anymore as it is none of my business… like wtf eh?! The game look and feel isn’t the game designer’s business?!

After the prototype is done, I entered a phase where all I do was to keep producing pitching proposals as per requested by my Project Manager, who was tasked by our boss. So for nearly 4 months, I just churned out proposals after proposals which I hardly get any feedback or comments on unless I send it to my ex- business development manager. That phase was basically the last straw for me. All I have gotten from my company is by learning through mistakes that we have committed and while it is arguably the best way, it is also a painful and draggy learning process. And if the management actually learned from their mistakes and avoid them in future, I wouldn’t have mind staying. Regrettably, that isn’t the case

On the brighter side, I am glad that I have been accepted into the Digipen-Ubisoft course and I believe it will be quite a wonderful learning experience for me. I really hope to gain as much knowledge as possible from the Ubisoft production personnel and eventually be able to join Ubisoft as a Game Designer. I am viewing this opportunity as a silver lining in my seemingly bleak future as a game designer. If you are an aspiring game designer reading this, a word of advice is to always try to learn from everyone around you – be it fellow designers, artists, programmers, project managers, producers or anyone in the gaming industry. It is hard for a person to see things in many perspectives and thus obtaining feedback from everyone will often allow you to see what you are blind to. Ultimately, your job is to design a game that is well-liked by everyone, not just yourself.

I would like to end off by hoping that game companies will give their junior game designers more freedom to exercise their creative minds. IMHO, trust is the most valuable gift that a new game designer can ever hope for and it is through this trust that we can learn from the most. The ‘trust’ could be as simple as… say… being in charge of planning out the menu flow of a game and yet it can mean a lot to us.

Taboo

Last night G and I kicked some serious ass in Taboo. T and P were our opponents which seems a little unfair. T doesn’t speak English very well (running joke – he’s totally American, we just make fun of him all the time), and to pair them up against G and I, whose minds function on the same wavelength and have an unbelievable amount of inside jokes was just a tad…let’s say wrong. The end score was 144 to 81. I do not jest.

Mom and family came down today and moved me into my new room. Funnily enough, both the old roommate and the new were gone for the weekend, so the move was accomplished with minimum effort and rather painlessly. I am just ecstatic. Also went shopping. I bought a ton of fruit, veggies, and a new bathing bag, a vaccuum cleaner and a water filter. I cannot begin to explain how happy this all makes me – now I can eat in my room and even skip some meals in the food court. It adds a little spice to life. Score.

I haven’t done any homework, although I have a ton. I should probably get on that before I go to a friend’s sketch comedy show at 10 this evening. I hope and pray that it will be beyond awesome, like it was last week.

O mica descriere

Fiecare are o mica poveste. Fiecare clasa are avantajele sale.

De fine jentene derimot DIGGA meg:) Whazzup with that yo?

Insane Crazy Dancefloor Opener

Du er i “totally clueless/I don’t give a FUCK/småfull-lignende”-modus.

Ellers gikk kvelden greit. Jentene har latterkrampe begge to.

Good stuff.

Hehe, neida.

Daft Punk // DJ Hero

Daft Punk & DJ Hero! OMG. If you haven’t seen this game, you need to check it. And for the people who always wanted to be a DJ and never could be, why not step into the shoes of the greatest dance duo ever! It has something ridiculous like 93 tracks and exclusive megamixes only available on the game. Dropping late Oct, not sure whether that is an Australian release, but I want it!

Fallout 3, The DLC: Operation Anchorage

Virtual reality is always best when you have a chance of dying in real life.  It makes it feel much less virtual and much more real when you know the lawnmower man will kill you for reals.  It makes the agent’s desert eagle look even more intimidating when you know that your brain will fool your body into dying when you don’t dodge fast enough (and why don’t people just aim at the nuts when the agents do that dodgy thing?).

Operation anchorage puts you in that spot, matrix style.  A new radio signal is sent out through the wasteland (sound familiar?) and if you heed its call, you fight your way through super mutants to a small outcast outpost.  They need your help.  Some one has to go through a VR simulation of the battle for Anchorage, Alaska, and beat it, to unlock a treasure trove of tech.  Of course, you are the only one who can do it thanks to your pip-boy.  You are warned that it is front line, heavy combat and if you die in the sim, you die in real life.

Agree to help, and with a change of clothes you enter the sim and into the battle.  The fight begins with an opening level set in the mountains.  The scenery is rather well done, although, contrary to popular belief, you cannot see Russia in the distance.  In this level you must make your way to some artillery pieces that the chinese have taken over and are using to pound american lines.  You must destroy them to help take the heat off the americans.  Once thats done, you have a mission to accomplish.  Three to be exact.

The set up is that you have to take out a couple objectives then rush the main chinese base.  Once you finish that, you are congratulated, then booted out of the sim.  Upon your return to the real world, the High Tech Armory is unlocked and the commander of the Outcast detachment tells you to take whatever you want.  At this point a fight ensues and they all kill each other.  Which is great for you, since you get all of their loot too.  It’s a win all around.

So pros and cons?  Well on the con side, you can’t replay the mission if you want to.  I would have liked to, but then again, you can’t replay through any other quest once its finished, of course, so thats no big deal.  Also, as you will see in my later reviews of the rest of the DLC, there are some design trends that seem to be rehashed for some of the other add ons.

As for the pros, you get alot of good XP vs the chinese.  The gameplay has a few new features that add a couple cool features to the game, one of these being the limited command of NPC’s, to aid in the fight.  Also, while playing the VR sim, you don’t heal or replenish ammo by the usual means.  Instead you find health and ammo replenishing apparatus scattered along the way.  This makes it feel like a fight to the next health/ammo drop, but its a nice departure from the need to worry about the limited supply of those things constantly.  However, the real win is in the tech.  Some of the stuff is game altering, and the rest is still worth caps.

This DLC is definitely worth downloading, just for the tech alone.  There is also some cool back story and history revealed with this one.  The only thing it doesn’t do is increase your level cap.  You still max out at level 20 with this one.  If you want to level higher than that, you have to also download Broken Steel, which will be my next topic.  —RHL

Sooo

I have officially deleted my old blog. I was a bit sad to do it, but it had to be done. I was always stopping short of discussing how I really feel about things, and often withholding posts altogether due to the prospect of real life repercussions.

Rule of the net: girls who like you will google your name.

And then my dad told me last week that he has been reading my blog. THANKS DADUMS.

So what am I doing here? I said in an earlier post that this is some kind of “game blog.” (I think I said that, I can’t be fucked checking.) I don’t know why I said that. It isn’t, and I’m not a pickup-artist. Although I will admit that my game is pretty tight for a completely introverted misanthrope. Shit, it’s tight by the standards of an extroverted humanitarian. (Hmm… something seems dissonant about the concept of a game-savvy humanitarian. Although I’ll post in the near future about why there really is no problem here.) And I’ve already offered a few tips pertaining to this. And I mention it in my ‘About’ because I plan on giving more (and, well, because it worked in the rhyming scheme of my wee poem), and because much of why I started this blog is so I can reflect on this area of my life more.

The Pseudonym: I looked over at my bookshelf a while ago and saw Hunter S. Thompson next to Aldous Huxley (not sure why it’s ordered like that) and the name jumped out at me. I like it in part because both of these figures have quite heavily influenced how I think life should be lived (by me, at least), and in part because the name just sounds porn.

Umm… Have fun!

One conundrum our team is currently mind-wrestling with is how to expand the Varsity Heroes universe beyond campuses. The conclusion reached in our studio is that campus arenas are not the only settings students would want to fight over and conquer. This opens up a broad set of possibilities ranging from maps of real-world warzones to battle arenas inspired by sprawling worlds of popular games in the fantasy genre. Exciting possibilities, all of these.

So expect the future incarnation of Varsity Heroes to spill over to unexpected locations.

When in doubt, plug

This may become a weekly feature at In Mala Fide, as everyone loves a good link. First up, Beta Prime has an, erm, interesting post on how betas can interact with blacks: My approach with black females is to treat each of them like they are the hottest white girl I’ve ever seen. They lap up attention like any girl, even if you’re white, but especially if you happen to be a guy who is desired by white females. Females hate all other females. This is even more true when it comes to black female on white female hate. White females have been ‘taking their strong black men’, and they hate them for it. Some good advice, some bad advice, and some strange advice is contained in that link. Next up, Default User advises the ladies on how to win over an alpha male:

Given that I don’t plan on turning this into a linker blog, these plug posts will only be on Sunday afternoons from here on out.

First up, Beta Prime has an interesting post on how betas can interact with blacks:

My approach with black females is to treat each of them like they are the hottest white girl I’ve ever seen. They lap up attention like any girl, even if you’re white, but especially if you happen to be a guy who is desired by white females. Females hate all other females. This is even more true when it comes to black female on white female hate. White females have been ‘taking their strong black men’, and they hate them for it.

Ideas good, bad, and weird are contained in that link.

Next up, Default User advises the ladies on how to win over an alpha male:

Let him know those three things. Communicate them clearly in your looks, words and actions. Adore him: he is the greatest and you are lucky to have him. Respect him: you do not always have to agree but never ever put him down in private or especially public. Lust for him: I am not sure what the male equivalent of “gina tingle” is but he should feel it. In less poetic terms: Don’t give backchat but do give blowjobs.

Want to hold onto any man, ladies? Keep his balls empty and his stomach full.

Sofia reminds us all why you shouldn’t drink and blog:

Guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuyyyyyyyyysssssssssss.

Ungh god

There’s also a Carl Jung quote in there, if that’s your shot of vodka.

Roissy has an insightful post on the growing popularity of Amish bodice rippers:

Amish men, listen up! You’ve allowed a sliver of the heathen slut culture to invade your oasis. Your womenfolk are reading crass female porn under their bedcovers. And make no mistake, it is PORNOGRAPHY. Cheap thrills to tingle ginas. It’s just a small step from there to Amish women demanding equality in the fields and nagging you to do more housework. Then comes Amish feminism (6th wave? It’s all the same briny crap) and finally Amish bukkake. Give an inch, and they’ll make you yearn for the relative modesty of Rumspringa. If this doesn’t scare you straight, try picturing a guy like me seducing one of your bonnet-wearing daughters, my hand first touching her forearm, then her thigh, a neg lighting up her eyes, and a makeout behind the hay bales as I promise her a world of adventure and excitement.

As an aside, while I note that social conservatives inveigh against male pornography all the time, I have yet to see one of them say an unkind word against female pornography, despite the fact that the latter is both equally destructive and far more ubiquitous (you can buy it at Walmart, for Woden’s sake). Another reason why their credibility is shot.

Roosh discovers the reason why American women are just so goddamn unbearable:

You will see that the American woman has aquired what I call the Essence Of Man. Her neverending quest for equality has indeed worked, for a part of a man’s brain has sprouted inside their own. Understand: American women are hermaphroditic when it comes to their behavior, personality, and attitude. When you date an American woman, you are dating a part-man and not a true woman. For that you actually need to go abroad.

American chicks – fuck ‘em, chuck ‘em, and find the mother of your children abroad.

Aoefe talks about appearance, imagination and physical attraction:

What I really think happens is they’ve formulated an idea of what the person looks like before they’ve met them. They have ideas of what they find attractive in looks, dress and demeanor. The only thing they’re privy to in dating in the dark is personality and kissing. Not to underestimate kissing mind you but in spite of hot kissing prior to the reveal the actual person’s appearance will stop them cold. One episode had a sketch artist draw what the dates thought their date would look like. They had very real images without even talking to their partner about what they looked like! When they actually saw they looked nothing like they imagined, although attractive, they lost interest. Men in particular would say “she’s not my type”.

Imagination rarely ever lives up to reality.

Talleyrand shows us that being nice isn’t something to strive for:

I repeat, that although men have been taught to be nice, it is not a virtue.  It is in fact the opposite, it is a vice.  An addiction.  Something that nice guys can’t help doing, and continue to do, even though it doesn’t get them what they want, like a junkie or gambling addict, they keep doing more of it until it leads them to ruin.

Niceness != kindness – a distinction most are unable to make.

OneSTDV wraps up his interesting four-part series on education. From the final entry:

While the educational system continually reminds us that education is a requirement of successful people, real world jobs have only a tenuous connection to classroom instruction. Ignoring the numerous counterexamples of autodidacts, one must only look at the daily tasks of salespeople, secretaries, business executives, real estate agents, journalists, and store managers to see the absurdity of stating one needs four years to qualify for these positions. College instruction is often tangential to real world job duties and if necessary, it provides only a rudimentary foundation for future work. In many cases, college work will do almost nothing to prepare a worker, such as teachers who study abstruse sociological theory in order to handle 30 rambunctious nine year-olds.

I’m totally in agreement.

Another MRA blogger, MisAnDrope, takes on game:

Now, there are those who criticize ‘Gaming’ the system from a couple points of view:

1) Isn’t it unethical to pretend to be someone you are not/act in unusual ways to get somewhere with a woman – isn’t it misleading?

2) Isn’t this bad for the men involved, and our culture?

Now I can hear both of these criticisms, and I relate. On #1, it seems to me, a real man would be himself, no? On the other hand, when faced with a blatantly unfair ‘game’ where the other participants are not being anywhere near themselves (lipstick? blush? perfume? hair removal?) and are liable/likely to revert to a much scarier form once they ‘have’ you, perhaps ‘Game’ is very defensible. Especially when the culture/system we are playing into punishes long term relationships by USUALLY taking half of your assets, and potentially half of your income, and your progeny.

MisAnDrope updates infrequently, but his stuff is always worth reading.

Pro-Male/Anti-Feminist Tech shares his thoughts on why liberating Muslim women from “oppression” is a fruitless endeavor:

Even knowing this why were Iranian women so against the Shah because wasn’t he granting them increased political freedom?  The Shah was doing that, but outside of a handful of women, women aren’t interested in political freedom.  I was reading another MRA blog recently and someone pointed out how once the government/elites were done taking all freedom away from men, they would start taking away the freedom of women.  Someone else correctly pointed out that women aren’t going to notice or care that the government/elites are taking away their freedom.  Whether its in Iran or the West, outside of a handful of women, women aren’t interested in freedom.

As I’ve written elsewhere, institutionalized polygamy in the Middle East is a paradise for alphas and women, and hell for betas.

Welmer laments the rise of credentialism in our increasingly feminized world:

Unfortunately, our society is becoming more and more obsessed with standardized credentials, even as there has been a broad devaluation of the credentials themselves. This means that although it no longer means all that much to have a higher degree (due to affirmative action, grade inflation and other factors), the degrees themselves have become more of a necessity for even entry-level jobs that require few skills beyond typing and filing. This is preventing plenty of talented people – mainly young men – from obtaining positions in organizations in which they could potentially contribute a great deal.

Credentials? CREDENTIALS? We don’t need no stinking credentials!

Half Sigma remarks on the inability of so many college students to graduate in four years’ time:

Students who attend college but never graduate have the worst of both worlds: they have the debt of college graduates but without the credential. It would be better for everyone (except for people hoping to become college professors) if colleges just flunked out freshman who can’t keep up on a four-year track.

The college scam will soon be undone, and America will be better off for it.

Speaking of unresolvable clusterfucks, Marty Nemko ticks off the reasons why unemployment is not going down:

Time magazine proposes the typical liberal solutions that have already been tried and failed: funding colleges more and job retraining. We already have the highest percentage of college graduates in American history and as discussed earlier, employers are yawning at them because all we’ve done is taken weak high school students, lowered standards in college, but radicalized them to demand the moon from employers. So employers offshore, automate, or temp as many positions as possible. Regarding job retraining, it’s been tried and tried, and those federal training programs fail: cost a fortune per trainee and most trainees don’t land a job in their new career or don’t last.

Always remember, never forget: America is screwed.

Yasha Levine infiltrates a town hall meeting in Victorville, California, and gives us yet another reason to hate the Baby Boomers:

On some primitive level, the old people around me understood what I had not: the fight for healthcare reform is not just pitting the average American against giant health insurance vampires. It is also a fight between the young and the old, between the giant, aging Baby Boomer generation and the rest of us. They understand that we want to have some of what they have. But they are greedy, self-centered geriatric vampires and they do not want to share.

No single generation has done more damage to Western civilization than the Boomers. Epochs from now, history will gleefully piss on their crumbling bones.

Hermes, taking a page out of A.J. Travis’ book, asks whether men or women should be blamed for the current sexual dystopia:

This tendency to blame and hate women that arises in some segments of the MRA/MGTOW community appears to be a relatively recent phenomenon. I’m not sure why this is. It could be that traditional society carried an implicit recognition that women were fallen creatures too, but was also resigned to the fact that women were going to do what they were going to do, and given the necessity of men leading and women following, thought it more important to discipline men. (Incidentally, this would contradict the Roissysphere’s description of men as keys who will adapt themselves to whatever shape women choose their locks to take, but that is a topic for another entry.) And it could be that in modern society, even MRAs/MGTOWers have unconsciously absorbed the belief in female equality, so they expect women to make decisions on the same basis as men do, and become angry at them when they don’t.

It’s an interesting thought.

Libertarian Canuck Freedom Manitoba comments on a recent brothel shutdown in Winnipeg:

Because of the prohibited activities that surround prostitution it is difficult to engage in it without breaking any laws. Perhaps that is the purpose that some of these moralists have, to make it more difficult and force their morals onto other people. While it might do that, it doesn’t stop people from participating in it, just makes it more dangerous.

Manitoba – my third-favorite Canadian province.

Finally, the sadly underrated but intriguing Vera offers her sincere thoughts on game and what she looks for in a man:

Familiarity has its degrees, as does attractiveness. My taste is farther out than most, but they all differ a bit. Remember that if women rate you on a 1-10 attractiveness scale some of them will give you a couple more points than you would receive on average. I don’t know how one would go around finding them, though.

Her candid comments are in line with both the beliefs of game and Roissy’s description of Finnish women:

If you think teasing is all part of the fun of flirting, you will not get along with a Finn.  Joking banter that arouses an American girl will send a Finn rearing up with indignation at your effrontery.  You will be left scratching your head at how someone could be so hypersensitive to your playful humor.  I used to call my Finnish girl “finn-skinned”.  She almost cried.  The upside is that a Finn chick is a naif in the art of head games, so you’ll never have to deal with her flirting with other guys in a bar just to make you jealous.  Finns are introverted.  There is a sly Finnish joke that goes:  How can you tell if you’re talking to an extroverted Finn?  He looks at your shoes. But don’t mistake this aversion to sociability for weakness.  Remember, these are the people who held off a much larger Soviet invading force.  And the best sniper in history was this guy.  A Finn girl’s introversion hides a surprising strength of character.  She won’t tolerate her man walking all over her.  Fiercely loyal and commitment-oriented, Finns make fantastic girlfriends.  More than other women, Finns appreciate small gestures like spontaneously buying her a rocket pop from an ice cream truck.  Finn girls smell fantastic and look ten years younger than their age.

Remember that “the best stereotypes are rooted in truth.”

A short note on...Design jobs

Everyone dreams of having a good job. No matter how the criteria veries for everyone, weather it’s money, power, luxury or simply happiness, we all wonder what our future will hold.

After doing my fair amount of looking around for the latest word on future careers this is a short summary of the top 10 design jobs with the best prospects:

1. Game Designer – Let’s face it … people love games, our daily lives push us to strive for alienation from the constant flow of meaningless information and the stress of our daily take-out-the-trash-and-don’t-forget-to-pick-up-come-milk lives.

2. Animator – I am not biased or anything, but i do believe that this career has the potential of being a dream job for someone who loves breathing life into their imagination.Like game design, we need to give people somewhere to escape to.

3. Interior Designer – Habitats, being in control of your environment is a pretty powerful thing, people love to personalise and the rewards of hiring the right designer (never mind being the one) can be great!

4. Architect – Something i think will forever be in demand, someone who can maximise the potential of the space around us, no?

5. Graphic Designer – Communicating Visual information can help a business, good design sells and people are slowly realising that fact. Of course one needs to learn to distinguish a good designer from the average-shmo that has an illegal Photoshop copy and likes to play around with the shiny tools

6. Mobile Designer – A shiny new phone makes people happy… we do live in a material world after all… more shiny new phones, more happy people… right?

7. Web Designer – The beast is constantly growing, so logically we need more and more people to feed it.

8.Art Director – Direction, management, success is all about organisation and vision. Some might agree with me when I say we need more vision and less bureaucracy!

9. Product Designer – It’s all about design, design makes people happy, i have great respect for this career path and when done well it can inspire beauty!

10. Fashion Designer – Clothes make people happy… see “Mobile Designer”

Thoughts? Drop me a line with why you think these sectors are growing.

Weekly App Store Picks: September 12, 2009

The Beatles may not have arrived in the iTunes Music Store just yet, but it’s not all disappointing news: the App Store has been updated with a new look and a stack of new iPhone apps have been released. As ever, here are my picks from the latest additions.

My top pick for this week is Hitchcock, plus I’ve also checked out Newsstand, Blades of Fury and Rhapsody.

Hitchcock ($19.99)

There’s a fantastic range of apps on offer to budding iPhone-based photographers at the moment. Tools such as QuadCamera and ColorSplash make for fun and effective photo-enhancing toys, and, once you’re done touching up your latest masterpiece, you can share your photography on Flickr via their official app. For folk who want to take their photography a step further and start dabbling in film, Hitchcock has arrived. Don’t let the messy interface fool you, this is a powerful app that’s packed with seriously useful features. Essentially a storyboarding tool, the app allows you to drop in photos as panels, outline camera movement, set shot durations and even add audio notes. Once you’ve laid out your latest shoot, you can export as a PDF too. Possibly a tad pricey but potentially an indispensable tool for indie film directors.

Newsstand ($4.99)

Byline might have been the most useful RSS reader on the block, but there’s a new news-gathering app in town and it’s got a great feature-set and good looks too. Newsstand incorporates a gorgeous newspaper rack style interface, fusing traditional with modern, allowing you to skim the latest headlines in style. Alongside Google Reader syncing, Instapaper support and sharing via Twitter, Newsstand also incorporates two essential RSS features: offline browsing and an embedded browser. I like to be able to open the app up and sync the latest news and happenings across the web for reading later. And for when I’m connected, an embedded browser is essential for those moments when I want to explore a story a little further.

Blades of Fury ($6.99)

There are two interesting things about this app. First up, this game is effectively classic Japanese coin-op and console beat-em-up Soul Calibur, shrunk on to the iPhone. It’s 10 medieval fantasy characters, each brandishing a different sort of pointy stick and an array of special moves. And secondly, Gameloft has seriously upped its quality on the iPhone. It’s heavily leaning on the ideas of other more-successful gaming franchise, like Gangstar’s GTA-style gameplay and Modern Combat’s Battlefield vibe, but it’s releasing good games nonetheless. Just like it’s predecessors, Blades of Fury is derivative, but that’s only noticeable because it does such a stunning job of re-creating Soul Calibur. The artwork and graphics are a true achievement, I’m surprised to see that the iPhone can be pushed so far and while the control scheme isn’t perfect, it certainly works well enough to make for a fun hack ‘n’ slash fighter.

Rhapsody (free)

The joys of Spotify might not have reached the U.S. just yet, but that doesn’t mean that those of you who are stateside can’t enjoy the benefits of all-you-can-eat music streaming. Real Networks, the folks behind the wonderfully bloated ad-touting Real Player, launched its own iPhone app this week. Rhapsody hooks into Real’s music network, giving you wireless access to their gargantuan library, apparently touting more than 8 million songs. There are some neat music browsing features, like Rhapsody Radio and Charts, however, as our own Darrell Etherington noted, the sound quality isn’t so hot. It’s worth checking out though as, although you’ll need to be a paying subscriber to use the app on a regular basis, Real is currently offering a seven-day free trial of the service.

That’s all the picks for this week. I’ll be back in seven days with a fresh selection of App Store recommendations.

In the meantime, what apps have you been using this week?
